Exposing The Aspects of an EKG Technician

The different avenues for employment as an EKG Tech

What is an EKG Tech?

An EKG or electrocardiograph technician is a healthcare professional that tests patients for electrical impulses and then documents the results. EKG technicians usually find employment in doctor’s offices, clinics, or hospitals. They often run tests before patients undergo surgery and as part of regular physical examinations of anyone that has a history of heart problems.

On the Job

Usually, in an EKG test a technician will relax the patient to the best of his ability in order to get accurate results. Electrodes are attached to certain points on the patient’s body and an EKG machine close by displays the results the electrode impulses make. The test results are printed to paper and the technician then reviews them to make note of any problem areas before he hands them to the physician.

EKG technicians will find that they’ll work in many different types of schedules. Evenings, late night hours, weekends, and holidays may be common for technicians working in a lab. Technicians employed in a doctor’s office can look forward to working regular business hours depending on how the office is set up.

Getting Certified

In New Jersey, there are certification programs that will allow you to get certified within a year. These are usually available in community colleges and technical training centers. Students in high school can also get on the job training from cardiologists and experienced EKG technicians.

Employers tend to lean towards people that have gone beyond the bare minimum of requirements. This means in addition to getting certified, an associate’s degree from a community college would make you stand out more when applying for a job. Anyone wanting to pursue a career path as an EKG Tech can expect 8 to 16 weeks to become fully trained through on the job training.

Job Outlook

From 2012 to 2022, there is an estimated thirty percent of growth for EKG technicians. Anyone wanting to switch careers and start working in a lab or clinic will find that there will be many positions available. This is mainly due to more aging senior citizens requiring cardiovascular attention. Technicians that work alongside a doctor in a clinic will find better pay than if they were to work in a hospital.

If you’re unsure of what career to decide upon, but have a desire to help people. You may consider wanting to get trained as an electrocardiograph technician. The field is only going to grow within the next decade as the demand for skilled and knowledgeable EKG technicians increases.
