The Importance of Learning CPR

"The most common reason many people die from cardiac arrest is because no one nearby knew CPR, or if they did know it, they didn't actually do it." -Michael Sayre, M.D.

CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a lifesaving technique used for emergencies in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival. Brain damage can occur within minutes, fast action is the difference between life and death. There is not enough time to wait for an ambulance. Once the heart stops beating and the blood flow stops, a person can lose consciousness within 15 seconds. Within another 30 to 60 seconds, the individual will stop breathing and irreversible damage to the brain will follow after several minutes.  Every minute counts and knowing CPR can be the difference in saving a life.

Research has shown about 80% of cardiac arrest cases occur in the home or in a public place. In most cases, the person nearest to the victim at the time is usually a relative, an office colleague, or a passer-by, many of which do not have medical expertise. Bystander CPR is done less than half of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. You never know who, when or where a disaster could strike, it is important to be prepared. The decision to get trained could be the difference between life and death for someone. Learning CPR can give you the knowledge you need to help those you love, feel confident in emergencies, and save lives.

CPR is easy to learn and anyone can take classes! Some high schools teach CPR as part of the health class. Many careers, not just those in medical fields, require or suggest its employers to get CPR/BLS certified. BLS, which stands for basic life support, is geared towards healthcare professionals and go more in depth than CPR training. E&S Academy provides a CPR/BLS training course. The training program is just 4 hours long with same day certification and no experience is necessary.
