Home Health Aide Duties

Home Health Aide (HHA) provide personal care, in the home, for patients with physical disabilities and age related or cognitive disabilities. A HHA is more than a person who helps the elderly, they are a friend, someone valved to the person in need. They can be depended on and can provide the help needed for the patients.

Duties of Home Heath Aides:

  • Home Heath Aides provide a safe environment for their patients, by making sure the home the patient lives in is appropriate for their needs. For example if the patient needs wheel chair accessibility, the HHA will find solutions so the patient can move freely.
  • A HHA monitors patient condition by observing physical and mental condition. The HHA ensures that the patient has taken their medication, and the proper dosage.
  • They also support patients by providing housekeeping and laundry services; shopping for food and other household requirements; preparing and serving meals and snacks; running errands. Most patients cannot do these basic tasks on their own and require help. That is where a HHA comes in and saves the day. As well as assists patients by providing personal services, such as, bathing, dressing, and grooming.
  • A HHA is also a teacher. They helps patients care for themselves by teaching use of cane or walker, how to hold utensils in a way that it does not easily slip, etc. Most families are unsure how to care for an elderly person, or a person with special needs. The HHA also teaches the family how to care for this person such as teaching appropriate ways to lift, turn, and re-position the patient, gives advise on nutrition, housekeeping, and hygiene.
  • The best thing the HHA can do for their patients is provide companionship. Some elderly people don't have their families to help them and have to do these things on their own. For example, a person who is used to doing everything for themselves not requiring the help of others, now cannot even go to the bathroom on their own. These kind of people fall into a great depression. According to CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention), "Depression is more common in people who have illnesses or whose function becomes limited. Depression is found in 13.5% of those who require home healthcare and to 11.5% in older hospital patients". Just by being their for the patient a HHA is doing all they can do for the patient.
